Community Shield Winners: Arsenal 3 – 0 Manchester City by Yahoo! Sport

Last weekend, Arsenal kickstarted their new season campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield. Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, and Olivier Giroud gave the Gunners and their fans hope that the team will rise through the ashes and deliver the trophy. Manager Arsene Wenger has made some changes to the team by bringing in several new players: Mathieu Debuchy, Alexis Sanchez, David Ospina, and Calum Chambers. Debuchy, Sanchez, and Chambers were in the Gunners’ 3-0 victory over City, and their first trophy as an Arsenal player. This is Mikel Arteta’s second trophy as a Gunner ever since moving from his former team Everton.

Other clubs have also made changes, the biggest being Louis van Gaal’s instalment as Manchester United’s manager. Man Utd fans are praying that the Dutchman can instil some improvement to the once-fearless team that Sir Alex Ferguson left behind. Van Gaal recruited 3 new players for his first season’s battle for top spot: Ander Herrera (Athletic Bilbao), Luke Shaw (Southampton), and Vanja Milinkovic (Vojovdina). Big names like Ferdinand, Giggs, Vidic, and Evra have left Old Trafford to pursue their footballing careers elsewhere.

Liverpool emerged with biggest haul. Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, and Dejan Lovren, all from Southampton, Emre Can (Bayer Leverkusen), Lazar Markovic (Benfica), Divock Origi (Lille), and Javier Manquillo (Athletic Madrid) hope to spur the Reds to remain in the top-four and fight for the EPL trophy. Luis Suarez, despite his inglorious days as a villain on the field, will be wearing Barcelona colours as he takes on his La Liga rivals while former goalkeeper Pepe Reina has gone to Bayern Munich.

Here are the kick-off of the first ten matches this weekend, all in our local Malaysian time:

Who will be the Man of the Match? Who will be the player with the fastest goal or the most unsual goal scored? All will be revealed this weekend! Make sure to prepare the couch for the match, and please, guys, try not to antagonize the girls just to watch the match or she might throw you AND the TV set out the door! Alternatively, you can call a few buddies over to your nearest mamak restaurant and watch the match together. Don’t forget to support your favourite teams with posters from our Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and other EPL clubs albums at our Posterific Facebook page!

The Final Showdown!

How do you feel so far about the 2014 World Cup competition?

Did your favourite teams go through as expected?

We did not expect Brazil to lose so badly to Germany. Neither did we expect Argentina to clip the wings of the Dutch by Argentinian goalkeeper Sergio Romero in the penalty shoot-out. But milk has been spilled and now the competition is coming to an end. The focus will be on the final match between Germany and Argentina. Who do you think will win?

Germany vs Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals by FIFA.com

The closing ceremony will take centre-stage with a performance by Colombian crooner Shakira of the World Cup theme song “La La La (Brazil 2014)”. Colombia may not have made it through to the finals but at least they will have Shakira as their representative. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is no stranger to football as she has a son with Spanish footballer Gerard Pique, whose country bowed out of the competition in the early rounds.

Germany and Argentina will be making their final preparations for the biggest game of their lives with their respective managers (Joachim Low and Alejandro Sabella) expecting no less from the two top guns. Both will be eager to make an impact with the roar of their supporters ringing in their ears, and the coveted trophy standing just a few steps away.

So near, yet so far…

Speaking of the trophy, the most recognized prize in the world of football will be housed in its tailor-made Louis Vitton travel case as commissioned specifically by FIFA in 2010. Fabio Cannavaro, the captain of Italy’s 2006 FIFA World Cup victory in South Africa, came onto the field to unveil the trophy, and raised excitement levels ahead of the match. This year, Puyol’s and Bundchen’s act of presenting the trophy will bring the Maracana crowd to their feet.

Did you know…?

… That retired Spanish central defender Carles Puyol and Brazilian model and Luis Vuitton brand ambassador Gisele Bundchen will unveil the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ trophy before the kick-off of the finals. The duo will display the trophy before the game at the Estadio Maracana on Sunday, July 13 (Monday, July 14, in Malaysia). The trophy will then be awarded to the World Cup champions later that evening in Rio de Janeiro.

2014 World Cup Draw: Complete Group-by-Group Bracket by Bleacher Report

The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil kicks off on 12th June with an opening ceremony and ends with a bang on 13th July. 8 groups of 4 countries per group come to a total of 32 countries vying for the coveted World Cup trophy. For a whole month, fans will enjoy pulsating high-definition matches in two extreme weather conditions (heavy rain or blistering heat). Tempers will flare, rash tackles committed to snatch the ball away from their rivals, fake injuries, penalties and free-kicks are some aspects of a football match that pepper the field as two opposing countries fight for the ball to score as many goals as possible. Football fans come together during this footie-festive month, enjoying rounds of beer and cheer, and pray that their country will come out tops.

Inspiring the world and uniting football fans alike in this year’s 2014 World Cup held in Brazil!

Did you know? …

… That the trophy for the 2014 World Cup depicts three hands reaching up and coming together to hold the World Cup trophy? Yes, it is called ‘Inspiration’, and the yellow and green colours used on the trophy are actually the colours of the Brazilian flag! Interesting notion, isn’t it?

Matches played so far have disappointed many, yet gave reason to others for happiness. People will remember the 5-1 demolition that the Dutch subjected Spain to. Manchester United fans will savour the moment when former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie took flight to head in the first goal. Who could forget Costa Rica’s victory over Uruguay? What about the sweet victories for Germany (Thomas Muller’s inspiring hat-trick), France (Karim Benzema’s hat-trick), and Argentina (Lionel Messi’s wonder goal)? Brazil’s victory over Croatia was expected as they are the hosts of the competition and it would be embarrassing if they lost in the first round. It is embarrassing enough that Spain, former World Cup title holders, suffered a huge loss in their first round match against the Dutch (and a further loss to Chile meant Spain is out of the competition!).

But that’s not all! There are still more matches to come, bringing ever more shocks and surprises to the wide screen televisions of every household. Who will go home with the title and victory? Feeling the footie vibe yet? Who do you support? Which country would you like to win? How would you feel if the country of your choice did not get the chance to lift the trophy due to a misjudged error from the linesman? It is guaranteed to anger any fan, that’s for sure.
